Typically "magical" incantations or sorcery are not used to change her, but lightning, which to most of us is a normal and natural occurrence. Conversely, the old man has a mite infested, shabby set of wings that the chickens investigate to find parasites. This use of defamiliarization is an especially significant feature of magical realism.
