Compare and Contrast the Impression
Compare and Contrast the Impression London and Composed on Westminster BridgeThe two poems give a excellent visual description of London in very different ways; in Blake's poem he describes the city as a slum while Wordsworth's poem he describes London as a beautiful place in the hours of morning. In Blake's description he gives the impression that London is corrupt. He shows this with very strong visual images. In the first stanza he describes the "charted streets". This gives the impression that the city has something to do with business by using: "The charter'd Thames doth flow": charter'd implying that the river is a port. Later he uses the words to describe how people are unhappy "marks of weakness, marks of woe." This gives a strong image that people are unhappy and he can see it on the people's faces He does this by using repetition of the word "marks". In the second stanza he uses repetition of the word "every": This implies that all of the people are unhappy. Blake implies that the people are trapped in thei
" 'Mind forg'd' gives the impression that their minds are clouded, and manacles implies that they are imprisoned. Wordsworth uses personification again "Dear God!the very houses seem asleep. Also when he writes "And blights with plagues the marriage hearse". In the third stanza Blake suggests that there is slavery with "How the chimney-sweeper's cry. The words relate like this: in the first stanza the words "street, meet" as in meeting on the street, then he uses "fear hear", he hears the fear. r own minds by using "the mind-forg'd manacles I hear. " This makes London seem like it is modern because of "theatres and domes" but is still old and cultured with "temples" Wordwsorth also describes all the aspects of London such as the business parts He uses "Ships" which were used on the river because it was a port. Even though the two poems are very different they could be describing the same London but Wordsworth is describing London from far away and will not be able to see and hear what is happening in London, while Blake is walking through London and can see and hear all the people around London. In Wordsworth's Composed on Westminster Bridge he gives the impression that London is a beautiful clean place . Blake uses a style of writing called balled. Next he writes "The river glideth at his own sweet will.
