Separate Peace
In this section, Knowles reveals how Finny is passionate about the things he believes in. Something he definitely shows interest in is the war scenario, at which he enjoys believing that it is all a hoax and especially enjoys convincing others that. His enthusiasm goes down, however when Brinker and Gene start the conversation of the war, because his ideas are being questioned.
Finny definitly doesn't think that it is at all possible for his best friend to ever do that, so he continues to bicker with Brinker about it. Finny is passionate about the things he believes in and takes them very seriously, making him stop at nothing to prove he is right. This disappoints Finny when he realizes that he wouldn't even be eligible for the war, but "out of it" completely because of his injury. He tries to prove that Gene "wasn't in" (163) the tree at the time, so that Brinker will finally give up on the idea, because there is no way that he will give up first when he believes in it so deeply. During the courtroom scene, Brinker is trying to put some type of blame on Gene for Finny's accident. Phineas thinks that Gene isn't responsible because he was "down at the bottom" (163) and wouldn't be able to at all shake the limb or let alone purposely hurt Finny. Phineas sees the war as the works of "plotting statesman" and the "deluded public" (150), but this big let down for him only brings a "faded" smile that "brought a close" (150) to his fantasies.
