Working mothers

In the past in a traditional family the man was responsible for all the financial matters and expenses, and the woman for the raising of the children and all the housework. But society has changed and along with it the family structure too; on many occasions today the women help their husands with the financial burden by working, but helping out is not the only reason today's women work.Today women are more independant and educated than they were in the past and they share equal rights and responsibilities as men. But when women that work decide to get married and have children too and decide to continue working, then they must struggle to balance their domestic and professional roles. Thus as Harper and Richards point out in Mother and Working Mothers women look for and even train for " a job that would offer night and weekend or one in witch she could keep the children with her. ( 125 ) Yet many believe that women can not manage to balance these roles something that will affect negatively their roles in their families because of the emotional strain. Reality is very different. Solutions do exist which a working mother can consider in order to help keep her child happy, her husband, and of course herself.

An other solution for a mother who wishes and needs to work is the home-based job. ( 302 ) In this way actually both the workng mothers and the husband find the marriage a beneficial arrangement, where the two can find solutions to practical problems. So, isn't the answer to our thesis obvious?. " ( Moen 1988 ) Nearly twenty years later, this number has probably doubled because Western society especially, sees modern women going to universities, furthering their education and looking for a job. Part-time and home-based jobs are becoming more and more popular every day, and the benefits are many for both the employer and the employee. When a husband assumes responsibilities within the house freeing his wife of traditional domestic tasks ( such as helping with childcare, cooking, cleaning ), he also feels closer to his children. In the book entitled Not Guilty,Lisa Silberstein, a clinical psychologist and author of Dual-Career Marriage A System In Transition believes that success in marital satisfaction totally depends on a couple's open communication about issues and its ability to be flexible with situations that arise. From the employer's point of view, a part-time employee might not seem to be in his best interest, because he might have training expenses to incur for personnel who are not permanent, but today, it seems that " Part-time employment enables businesses to be more profitable by lowering personnel cost . " Not surprisingly given their child-care and other domestic responsibilities, women hold the majority of part-time jobs. -time jobs is the solution which working women can today consider in order to balance child-care and their financial obligations.
