Beloved
Toni Morrison's novel Beloved is centered around a true story of Female slave and her struggles. The whole novel is written from the African American point of view. Morrison uses a combination of symbolism as well as language and imagery to paint this horrific account of slavery. Beloved is a very emotional tale written with great style and eloquence Toni Morrison did a lot a research before she began writing Beloved. When she first started the story she was going to do a piece on "self-murder and the way one can kill and sabotage themselves with the best intentions." During her research she came upon the story of Margaret Gardner, who was a 20 year old slave woman who ran away from Kentucky, When she was found in Ohio she went to a shed and proceeded to kill her children. From this information she created her Character Sethe. For a mother to kill her own children she was saying that she valued their lives so much that she did not want them to go through th pain and suffering of slavery. This act of love was
" These words are the only words that Sethe remembered from the funeral of her child. He was an African-American who tool runaway slaves to a place where the air was free. When these three seemingly unimportant numbers are broken down they have a greater meaning. Then like the grand chorus of a song Sethe would come in wiht "Beloved, she is my daughter"This was a " Masterpiece an over-powering, memorizing combination of words" ( Los Angeles Time). He had Paid the price for his freedom, thus his name "Stamp-Paid" Stamp was an essential part of many African-American's journey to freedom. Sometimes these conversations would be between the three of them creating a lyrical triad of a sort. Furthermore , the name "Beloved" was a powerful connection to the born-again baby of Sethe. rarely occurring because the unspoken rule of slavery was to not get close to anyone you love because they were going to get taken from you in the long run "For [Morrison} " killing the children " was the ultimate gesture of being a loving mother. " This gesture of love and affection was not inhumane but courageous and very generous. Toni Morrison "uses numbers as a way to communicate". The man that carried Sethe and her baby across the river's name was "Stamp-Paid" (Beloved,91) His name holds a lot of meaning. Sethe had three children, the third one was killed, leaving the numbers 1,2 and 4, creating the irony of the home address. In Addition, Beloved during birth never had a name, She was called the "Crawling-Already" baby. If she had have had a name during her short life, her reincarnation would have lost it's very powerful effect. In addition to the number symbolism Morrison creates names for the characters that hold a deeper meaning.
