The Teaching of English in Alto

Language, in the world, is the essential means of communication, both for intellectual and for social messages. It is also an extremely complex and challenging system of rules and principles, which nevertheless children and young people acquire with apparent ease with great rapidity. The learning of any language, its nature, function and development, can provide insight into human modes of thought and social interaction.Based on what I have stated above, I consider that, within this modern world, the learning of English plays an important role in the development as well as in the improvement of the students' educational training. In this regard, it is highly important to think over the way we can help out to its enhancement and growth. The following study is concerned with the teaching of English in Private schools of El Alto, and the main purpose is to present a general illustration about the level of effectiveness students of the 4th secondary level attain in the English language learning.Founded on my own experience, I consider worth saying that through the time I have been teaching English, I have noticed the deficient outcomes that a great number of students have been obtaining year after year.

Therefore, it can be established that in public schools there is a six-year period for the teaching of the language. The low salaries teachers are paid are undoubtedly responsible on teachers' motivation. However uniformity with the method or approach was not found because of the use of different approaches. Another important detail we can mention is that unlike public educational institutions, an important number of English teachers are graduated or students of the Linguistic and Languages Career, others belong to Normal Superior Simon Bolivar and a third group embraces teachers who do not have college or university background. According to a survey conducted in La Paz and El Alto by Editorial Santillana in 1996, the teaching of English starts in the 1st level of primary school. And the rest are improvised teachers completing inadequately the job of a real language teacher. In consequence, it can be concluded that numerous private institutions do not delegate the English subject to improvised teachers, given that nowadays private schools rhetoric proclaims intensive English training. The survey was also valuable to perceive that lots of students are aware of the limited knowledge they acquire and hint that during the time they were expected to learn the language, they have simply been repeating the same grammar items or structures year after year without developing a real understanding of the English language. 2 The Teaching of English in Public Schools of El Alto. Very few schools or teachers have the materials for profitable language training. After having questioned myself I decided to conduct a previous survey (March, 2001) in three private schools of El Alto. The response illustrated clearly that there might be various reasons why most of the students revealed such negative attitude towards the language.
