Alice Walker

             As the poet, Jean Toomer, is talking to a prostitute, he explains how one day even a girl like her will have a world of opportunities, because of art. In the south many black women were so caught up in their own spirituality that many people forgot their identities, and only knew them for their beliefs. Their dreams and hopes were so powerful that the meanings were unclear to them. These beliefs forced their minds to abandon their souls. To these women the future was no where in sight because they were always lost in their spiritual beliefs. Their lives are filled with emptiness because many of them are so lost that they just go with the first opportunity that came up. These lost souls were Black artists. They had no where to go because the world would not accept a black women artist. This lead many to the question of how did a black women stay creative all this time because it was a crime for a black to even be literate. But Black women kept believing because they knew that in time people would realize their identities. Two examples of this are Phillis Wheatley and Virginia Woolf. They were black writers who both inspired the African American world. Phillis was captured at the age of seven to be a slave. Many white Americans had great respect for her because of what she had been through. However even today black artists in America lower the standards rather than elevate them. That is why black women must keep fighting and not give up because after all, their grandmothers never would. Walkers mother was independent, leaving her home at the age of seventeen to start her own family. She worked hard to raise her five kids. All the time she spent working, she still had time to be creative. Art doesn't have to be a painting, it can come in all sorts if unexpected forms. Like a quilt or clothes.
