Religion in schools

             In June of 2002, the 9th Circuit Court of the United States overturned a 1954 congressional ruling inserting the phrase "under God" in the pledge of allegiance. Now the Pledge of Allegiance is being considered unconstitutional. This ruling restarted the debate of religion in schools. Religion in public schools has been banned collectively but not individually, as long as it does not cause an interruption. Growing up in Catholic schools, I never really thought of debating the Pledge of Allegiance or whether "In God We Trust" should be on imprinted on currency. But I did think about separating church and school constantly. Considering the pros and cons, I wonder if church should be completely banned from school.
             There are many reasons why religion is kept out of school. To begin with, most of the arguments repetitively cry unconstitutional. For a state funded school to teach any religion would be against the law. Another objection to religion in schools is that children will begin to believe that rules do not matter. In an online debate, an anonymous poster stated "In EXODUS 35 Moses tells the people that those who break the Sabbath, even lighting a fire in their homes, should be put to death. Will this Commandment teach our kids about ignoring inconvenient rules?" And finally, in the same debate, another anonymous person suggests that religion may be connected with mental instability. His supporting evidence is that a boy in Georgia attended mass the night before killing six of his classmates.
             However, there are also many arguments that are for religion in schools. This side of the dispute also has a repetitive argument, "our country was founded upon religion." Another argument from an additional online poll says forbidding the majority to pray is "tyranny of the minority."
