Television, Movies and News Broadcasts Corrupting the Youth
Are television, movies and news broadcasts corrupting the youth of society? This paper examines the issues surrounding this question, and attempts to determine if violence depicted in the media influences the actions and behavior of its viewers. Evidence shows acts of violence are continually increasing in television, movies, and news broadcasts, impacting the youngest members of society. TV shows and movies typically inform and entertain viewers, and try to persuade them to buy products. However, while entertaining viewers, they routinely depict violence, a common staple used in delivering media’s message. The appalling fact is that these violent shows are impacting youth and endangering society. Youth violence has increasingly become an apparent part of modern living. Today there are more juvenile homicides, youths carrying weapons, and youth gang members than any other time during our history. This increase in violence is originating from somewhere, and one possible source may be the Television industry (Barbour S). Violence on TV and in the movies are inspiring people to set their wives on fire, lie down in the middle of the road, rape, steal, murder, and commit shootings. Sixty years ago television, or TV as it became known, was invented. Violence can be viewed in cartoons, soap operas and prime time shows. The parents would have to enter a password in order for shows to be blocked or added to the cable. Therefore, it is up to the parents to monitor television more closely and to discuss with their children what the violence on the television means or simply to shut the television off so they make sure that there won't be any violent content viewed. However, the cycle of violence can be broken by committed parents, who remain aware of what their children are watching for entertainment and make sure that they are learning right from wrong. When news shows a higher level of crime during their broadcasts it causes people to believe that there is a higher level of crime in society. Violence has long lasting effects on children behavior. The movie industry tries to explain the fact that viewers are increasingly hungry for films with more violence. (Mudore) When some teens watch these shows it makes them more aggressive and anti-social. The study showed that a little over half of the boys had committed a crime or had some sort of violent behavior. ” (Sparks) More recently government officials such as Sen. Children often do not realize that it hurts to hit someone else because they routinely see it on TV. This audience image has tended to narrow the range of subject matter and forms movies employ, and has caused moviemakers to invoke formulaic approaches and engage in imitations of breakthrough successes, in what are known as movie cycles. According to the Journal of American Medicine, at least 10 percent of all violent behavior in America's society is a result of viewing violence in movies and on television.
