The 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece

It is the year 2004, and that means it is the sumer of the Olympic Games. When I was a child, the Olympic Games meant a great deal to me. I used to love watching the opening ceremonies and watching the athletes proudly coming out representing their countries. It was a geography lesson to see all th ediverse faces and flags from different parts of the world. I used to be curious to see what activities or performances would happen. I used to wonder how th etorch was going to be lit. My favorite sports to watch during the Olympic Games were track and field, basketball, swimming, and baseball. At the end of th egames, I would watch th eclosing ceremony and

The Olympic Games have become less popular, which makes it difficult for the host city to get people to come and watch. The American media does not expose us to enough news or sports from other countries. Some may attribute viewer decline an dlost of gold to the US men't basketball team to the threat of terrorism. I felt this way because during the Olympic Games, I felt a connection to the entire world not just the United States of America, and when th egames were over that connection was over. This Olympics th eUS basketball and baseball teams both took th eback seat to the other teams. As I got older, along with the rest of th ecountry, my love for the games decreased. Ever since September 11, 2001, the fear of terrorism has swept not only through America but also throughout the world. Instead, we watch more of our professional athletic sports like basketball and baseball. I believe that people have forgotten that when th eOlympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia there was an act of terrorism by an American, but the games were still relatively safe for all that attended. It bothered me when I was watching television seeing doubts from people about the security in Greece. Some people believe that htere are too many holes in Greece's defense and the country cannot cover all th easpects of security. Some of th ebest players did not come because of security concerns. The Olympics are more popular in the International Community than in the United States. Athens, Greece had a tough job of getting people to the games.
