Whitman
Walt Whitman truly loves and respects the physical and spiritual aspects of the human body. In his poem "I Sing the Body Electric", he walks among the common people, notices their bodies hard at work, their love for each other and describes it in great detail and adoration. Whitman wrote this poem glorifying the common man, his connection with nature, and human equality to promote the belief that all that is from nature is perfect. Whitman's true love is man in harmony with nature. There is only one instance in this poem in which he spends much time describing one person specifically. He praises a farmer, hunter, fisher and sailor; a classic example of a man in harmony with nature. He is a respected great-grandfather who, as Whitman describes, is loved by everyone that he meets. Whitman goes on, writing, "When he went with his five sons and many grand-sons to hunt or fish, you would pick him out
14) Whitman used the example of the old man because he is the incarnation of the poem. To have that connection with others fills Whitman with emotion, as he writes ". With a link between man and nature, there is equilibrium, love and harmony. The effect of the repetition gives more feeling when describing each member of the community individually, and gives a greater impression that they are a part of a whole. as the most beautiful and vigorous of the gang, You would wish long and long to be with him, you would wish to sit by him in the boat that you and he might touch each other. In this way, he "sings the body" in both a personal and general way, with both an individual and communal quality. In "I Sing the Body Electric", he uses it when conveying the everyday activities of the common people. The connection between humans and their habitat is vital, and the more a society disrupts it, the more chaotic that society will become. 17] The connection between all things in nature can be considered the ultimate Whitman's use of "the body" in his poem. Whitman found himself personally connected with nature and the people he saw everyday. His idea that everything is linked in this fashion is directly related to his idea of human equality. His connection to nature demands respect and love from anyone that comes into contact with him.
