Franklin Roosevelt
Franklin D. Roosevelt became President during the depths of the Great Depression, the 32nd President was able to communicate his own strength and assurance to a badly frightened American People. "The country needs and unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold persistent experimentation!"1 Franklin D. Roosevelt was a man of his words, he brought hope as promised prompt, vigorous action and helped the American people regain faith in the government and themselves. FDR's ebullient personality charmed not only heads of state but American voters as well. During his twelve years he established an unusually close rapport with the American people. Franklin D. Roosevelt was a confident man who feared nothing, like said in his inaugural address, " The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."2Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born on the Hudson River estate of Springwood in upstate New York on the 30th of January 1882. He was the only child of James and Sara Delano Roosevelt. The family were wealthy landowners and frequent trips to Europe were not an uncommon thing in the Roosevelt family. FDR's upbringing was very un-American as the family was very European orientated,
"I'll tell you," Franklin Roosevelt once told a friend during his toughest years of his presidency, " At night when I lay my head on my pillow and it is often pretty late and I think of the things that have come before me during the day and the decisions that I have made. He immediately accepted nomination as governor of New York and convincingly won. FDR greatly admired "Cousin Teddy," he was his role model and he had now set Franklin Roosevelt with another goal at which to aim - the highest office in the United States. Roosevelt's response to this was an electrifying inauguration speech in which he declared: " This nation asks for action and action now!"4 In what was to become the rallying cry of his peacetime presidency, he promised a new deal for the people. On the 7th of December 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor which brought America into the war. He had to promote defence production without creating inflation, and he had to determine the allocation of the goods among the several theaters of war and the various Allied powers. The United States faced it biggest crisis since the civil war as more that 20 million were unemployed. In 1941 Roosevelt faced another problem. During Franklin Roosevelt's final year at Harvard University he became engaged to Theodore Roosevelt niece, Eleanor Roosevelt. He possessed boundless energy and had strong political convictions. Roosevelt directed organization of the Nation's manpower and resources for global war. "5 With this simple story, Roosevelt provides the key to understanding the essence of his presidency, for no factor was more important to his leadership that his absolute confidence in himself and in the American people. pg 23aspect of the nations economic life.
