What caused World War 1?
What made World War I spark? What where the events leading up to it? Who is responsible? These are some of the questions that people think of when they think about the road to World War I. Most wars have a "trigger" that really starts them off. The main trigger to World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. During the 1800's, many countries in Europe had become enemies, and many nations wanted revenge on each other from all the previous wars, and humiliating things in the past. At the turn of the 20th century, there were five main rivals between the European nations. They also happened to be the most powerful nations in Europe. They were Britain, France, Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. They were all competing over power, wealth and of coarse overseas lands. It was quite popular to take control over undeveloped countries back in that time. Britain was one of the stronger nations. It owned ¼ of the world's total population and was very wealthy. It also owned a lot of rich industries. But they still couldn't compete with Britain. He was very jealous of Britain and its power. This was to ensure Belgium that if they were ever invaded, then Britain would send troops over to fight for them. It was made up of 10 different nations. The next year, Germany built one of their own. But of course Britain was going to be better, and in 1911 they built another one that was even bigger and stronger. It was called the Balkan league, and it was made up of Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Montenegro. Russia mobilised its army and prepared for war. First Germany wanted to surprise the French by going through Belgium with a big army and then swooping around to the back of Paris from the north. One thing that all the rivals fought over was an area in the south-east part of Europe, the Balkans. It was also an Empire, but a very small one. Kaiser William II wanted to raise Germany's wealth, and make it a stronger nation, maybe even the strongest. Austria-Hungary wanted to help the Slavic people get independence from Serbia, because Serbia wanted to unite all Slavic people. e in Africa, being and undeveloped continent. A few years later in 1882, Italy joined the alliance, and it became known as the Triple Alliance.
