What caused World War 1?

             What made World War I spark? What where the events leading up to it? Who is responsible? These are some of the questions that people think of when they think about the road to World War I.
             Most wars have a "trigger" that really starts them off. The main trigger to World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
             During the 1800's, many countries in Europe had become enemies, and many nations wanted revenge on each other from all the previous wars, and humiliating things in the past.
             At the turn of the 20th century, there were five main rivals between the European nations. They also happened to be the most powerful nations in Europe. They were Britain, France, Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary. They were all competing over power, wealth and of coarse overseas lands. It was quite popular to take control over undeveloped countries back in that time.
             Britain was one of the stronger nations. It owned ΒΌ of the world's total population and was very wealthy. It also owned a lot of rich industries. Britain was a country that liked to explore and take over new lands as well.
             France also liked to explore, and had many colonies around the world, most of which were in Africa, being and undeveloped continent.
             Russia was the largest country in Europe, all though it did not have any overseas colonies. It was also a very poor country, but it was still a very powerful one because of its size.
             Right in the middle of Europe, there was the Central European Empire. It was also called Austria-Hungary. It was made up of 10 different nations. All of which wanted their independence. Franz Joseph II ruled the Empire.
             And finally, the fifth rival, Germany. It was also an Empire, but a very small one. Kaiser William II ruled over Germany at the time. He was very jealous of Britain and its power.
