Why the Civil War Laster 4 Years

The American Civil War was a people's war in which heroes and future leaders emerged transforming our country into a structured and disciplined nation. Fought on both sides with immeasurable courage it shall be, and is forever remembered as a test of perseverance and suffering. The civil war started and ended almost 4 years to the date with 620,000 casualties and a cost of over 6.1 billion dollars. Countless homes and farms were destroyed leaving peoples lives forever scared as they suffered throughout the war. But why did it last so long when expectations had been so low at the beginning of the war. Even before the first shots of the war were fired few believed the war would escalate to such a high and serious level as it did. There are in fact many reasons why the war waged on as long as it did. Whether it was because of the advantages the south had over the north or the north had over the south it's hard to say. The advantages each one had over the other seemed to flawlessly blend together in order to turn a 4 month skirmish into a 4 year total war. One of the first things that comes to mind when you try to think of why the war lasted so long the first one that comes first is how President Lincoln definitely had his h

These raids also lowered northern morale and delayed planned union offensives. Southern cavalry was also used to control areas between armies and to keep them informed of federal movements, intentions, and positions. On the other hand black units for the north fought in 449 engagements including 39 major battles. He bounced from one general to next almost faster than we could keep track of them. It's easy for us to look back and recognize what could have ended the war earlier than it did saving countless homes, and families. A single victory by Lee would not have altered the military situation, for the Confederate commander could not have followed up victory. They confiscated horses, supplies, and even captured countless numbers of soldiers. The south had a population of about 4 million African Americans which if used correctly could have turned the tide of the war. " The confederates conducted numerous raids on union supply trains and towns behind enemy lines. If things had been different who knows how many more years it could have continued. Only during the final, desperate months of the war, the Confederate Congress authorized the recruitment of 300,000 black soldiers, but the public raised such an outcry that no African American Confederate soldiers were ever committed to battle. Even Philip Sheridan, the cavalry commander for Ulysses S. This isn't the only reason they were able to win battles and slow union advances. Lee's only defeats came when he fought in the north on unfamiliar territory.
