Mists of Avalon VS Lady in Gil
People are often put into a position where another person's life rests in their hands. The fact that it is human nature to give a task all that you possess, if someone or something that you care about is at risk is effectively portrayed through the novels The Mists of Avalon and The lady in Gil. This is shown when the main characters of each novel are cautious rather than reckless, try harder when the odds are against them, and give the tasks at hand all that they possess to the point of both mental and physical exhaustion.The main character Morgaine- heir to the Head Priestess of Avalon- effectively backs up the above point of being cautious rather than reckless throughout the entire novel The Mists of Avalon. One example of this is when Morgaine is told that she must endure a husband that beats her even though she knows that all that she has to do is hit him once and/or use her powers in order to make him stop. Morgaine instead takes her blows knowing that if she hits him and then leaves him, she will not be able to fulfill the task that is to come. When the above facts of how both main characters push their physical and mental abilities to the boundaries of their human limitations, refuse to give up no matter what they face, and use caution where they usually would be reckless are combined, you can not help but to come to the irrevocable conclusion that when a person is put into a situation where someone or something that they care about is in danger, they will risk all that they possess in order to save it. This fact is proven when Morgaine almost dies in childbirth in The Mists of Avalon to produce the heir destined to save Avalon from fading away. He has to locate a statue- the Lady of Gil-, sneak around an island completely occupied with an enemy that knows he is there, retrieve the heavily guarded statue, and somehow find a way to unleash its powers. It is also shown when Morgaine stays up for weeks on end trying to puzzle a way to get herself back into Avalon to regain her title so that she can lead her people. An example of this is when Tigrallef decides to send the members of "The Web" to gather all possible information on the whereabouts of the Lady of Gil, and then spends time analysing that information in order to create an organized search pattern, rather than randomly searching for her and charging into a volatile situation blindly. In the novel The lady in Gil Tigrallef continually pushes his body to the point of unconsciousness due to exhaustion, while trying to find the surest and safest way to locate and obtain the Lady of Gil. The novels The Mists of Avalon and The lady in Gil prove this fact without question and leave no doubt in ones mind that it is true. To both main characters success is essential to the survival of their worlds. When Vivian dies in the novel The Mists of Avalon Morgaine is denied her rightful title of Head Priestess of Avalon by Merlin, and has to continually fight in order to claim that title which she needs in order to lead her people in preparation for possible defeat. In the novel The lady in Gil Tigrallef is constantly swamped with seemingly insurmountable odds against him. Due to this fact Morgaine is under constant pressure to switch religions and give up trying to put her son on the throne, but Morgaine instead becomes more dedicated to her task and remains steadfast in her beliefs. The main characters in each novel pressed on at all times. Tigrallef almost dies when captured by the Sharenk and only survives by willpower and a well-timed rescue by "The Web", only to continue trying to puzzle out the problem at hand as soon as he regains consciousness. er beliefs will end her chances at saving her world. Although all of these dilemmas cause him a great deal of depression, they also drive him to try his hardest to obtain the precious Lady of Gil.
