Censorship and Parental Advisory Stickers

Oh, mother, father, your blindness to our most blessed gift, NATURE, leaves us with the overwhelming task of correcting your utter mess....I understand why they want to protect their children, but for their own good, let me point out that though you may have to explain subjects to your children that you perceive as wrong, it is better to have the freedom to explain it in your own words than be silenced under a government that has the power to squash anyone who opposes their views....Try to restrict our freedoms and we will fight even harder to preserve them." -Jane's Addiction Album Message It is in my opinion that censorship of lyrics is wrong. An artist has one sole purpose, and that is to express himself or herself in the best way they can. By taking away that freedom, you are essentially taking the art away from the artist. This exerpt from a Jane's Addiction album is one of the best ways I could get my message across. Artists do understand their roles in life. They realize that people look to them for direction, and they
U2 talks about the apartheid in South Africa, Sting promotes environmental awareness, 10,000 Maniacs has tried to approach the subject of domestic violence, but radio executives refused to play it, so they pulled it off the album. I also feel that while the Parental Advisory sticker can be a good thing, it can also walk a very fine line with being over exaggerative, and will often be labeled because of the community leaders abilities to cope with the material, not the youths abilities. The way Eminem shocks parents now, is probably how adults reacted to "Good Golly, Miss Molly" when that first came out. Censorship is essentially in conflict with our democracy, because it violates the very laws that this country was built upon. " That is an incredibly loaded statement. also realize that children look up to them as role models. For example, there is a generation gap between a parent and a child. Now, while it may sound like a contradiction, I disagree with what it says on the sticker. Music can give us the news in a way that appeals to us. Although they object to lyric content, and I will address that further, they do not support censorship, and they do not have lyrics removed from a recording. There is no way to measure "explicit content", and it is often times needed to express an artists views. It is not the children who cannot handle the truth, it is the older generation that had trouble understanding how an artist expresses the truth.
