Renaissance thinking had a vast impact on the art of that period. Secularism (in Italy), humanism and individualism were three aspects of life that appeared in the Renaissance and each of those three aspects had a great impact on art itself. . . .
Renaissance painters not only painted objects with more realism than earlier artists did, they often filled their canvases with more objects, all carefully and accurately shown. The use of light and shadow made figures look full and real. Art from the Middle Ages, consisted of saints and Biblical figures being arranged in unnatural, geometric groups, and backgrounds were usually just one full color. The human body was an important aspect of many paintings at the time, because, people believed that the body was a beautiful thing and that it should be taken care of. Science had educated the artist on how to show linear perspective which was, to represent objects in relative sizes so that smaller objects appear to be farther from the viewer than larger objects.

During the Renaissance period, many brilliant artists appeared such as, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo.

Renaissance art flourished largely because of the patronage, or financial support, of wealthy citizens and the church. Leonardo da Vinci was the perfect example of the Renaissance man. He was an excellent painter, sculptor, engineer, scientist, and architect. By purchasing works of art, Renaissance men and women provided employment for many painters, sculptors, and architects. The Renaissance artists represented the human being as realistically as possible, often with backgrounds of the natural world. He created such works as The Crucified Christ with the Virgin Mary, and Saints and Angels. Among Leonardo’s great works, he is most gratified for his painting of the Mona Lisa.
