Antigone - Creon makes errors in judgmen

Throughout the play Antigone, written by Sophocles, Creon makes errors in judgment that eventually leads to the death of his wife, son, and Antigone. His headstrong and obstinate way of ruling is what causes his own demise. He believes that he is above the gods, and even what they say cannot influence his actions. "My voice is the one voice giving orders in this city!" (p.515 ll.105) The major error in judgment that Creon makes is his decision to give Eteocles a proper burial and not Polyneices. The gods say that everyone deserves the right of a proper burial, yet Creon decides that he has the power to deny this right. If he had just went along with what the gods said, he would not have had a problem. He favored Eteo

123)He will not listen to anyone else, and believes he is the most powerful and most intelligent person alive. He does feel bad for what he has done, but he turns it into how poor and unfortunate it is for him that he has done all these bad things. "I swear you'll regret this superior tone of yours!" (p. He feels self-pity, and believes he should die because he could not live with the pain he has caused himself. By the end of the play, Creon does become somewhat sympathetic. 92) Creon's "greater than thou" attitude is what drives his poor decisions. "You will do well to listen to him, King. cles because he thought he was fighting for his country, and Polyneices was fighting against it. Another major error in judgment was to not listen to his son Haimon, and drive him to the point of killing himself. Haimon gets so upset about his father's decision to take his soon-to-be-bride, Antigone, away from him, that he tries to stab him, but misses, then ends up stabbing himself and dying. However, it is mainly sympathy and pity for himself. He never really mentions how he feels bad for the people he has caused harm (or death), but it is always about him. 128, 133) At end, Creon's poor decisions and lack of judgment is caused mainly by his obstinate and godlike attitude.
