A Separate Peace
A Separate Peace written by John Knowles is about two boys who are best friends and worst enemies. The characters names are Gene and Phineas, also known as Finny. During the story Finny starts a club called Super Suicide Society so Gene can have some fun at Devon, but Gene assumes he is trying to ruin his study habits. The theme of the story is to think before you act, you never know what will result from it. Also do not let jealousy control your actions, you never know what could go wrong from it. Another theme of the story is that there is a little jealousy in us all. The setting took place during World War II at Devon school. Devon was a school were a lot of people went and would The main characters in the story are Finny and Gene. Finny is someone that is good at almost everything, he is excellent at sports. Everything he does is to make others happy. Even if he has to break the rules, he does it to have fun and to show Gene a good time. Gene (narrator) is someone who gets jealous over little things and tries his best to defeat Finny. He wants to be the best at everything. Gene and Finny were best
As the days go by they do almost everything together, they create a gamecalled blitzball. Finny is able to handle not being thebest at everything, Gene on the other hand cannot. Gene is put together by showing how he feels about Finny. Gene could have had a little sympathy for Finny's death because if he hated him or not Finny was good to him and people in real life would be sad over someone's death. When Gene visits Finny in the story he describes the outside of Finny's house. Gene is a jealous character because he wants to be better than Finny. The way the narrator writes is by using a lot of symbols to create the characters and to describe the background of the story. Blitzball is a game where there are no sides the object of the game is to make itto the river without being tackled, if you make it you win. So at the next meeting of the Super Suicide Society when they jump out of the tree Gene shakes the limb and Finny falls. Imagine if the story was told by Finny, you would think that Gene was just a friend andthe story would not be half as good. Finny is a good person who does anything possible to please Gene. At the end of the story Finny falls down the stairs. " Later on in the story he describes the inside and this is what he said " Here the small windows panes shone from much polishing and the walls were hung with miniatures and old portraits. What he says in the story is " He found it looking oddly newer than when he was astudent.
