Role of woman & men based on the film

The play "The Taming of The Shrew" by William Shakespeare takes places in a city called Padua in Italy, in about the 1500s. The play is about a man named Petruchio and Katherina having a power struggle between the two sexes. Petruchio, a loud and dominant man wanted to find a wealthy wife and Katherina was the one he chose to be his wife, she had the money and everything else didn't matter to him. But to make Katherina marry him was hard. Katherina was a quick – tempered, sharp tongued and violent woman. She was absolutely reluctant to adopt the "role" as a housewife. During the whole play, they argue and fight to show the power that the one another have. Petruchio was determined to "tame" Katherina to a soft and an obedient wife. In the end Katherina gives in, and the mission to "tame" the shrew (Katherina) succeeded which will be mentioned later.
During the 1500s, men were or appeared to be superior and dominant over women. In their society, women had a specific role as to be married, obey her husband, and to be a good housewife. If they don't succeed in doing so, then they were simply not the ideal woman and people would not respect her. The society was set up in a way that men were naturally the ones with the power over women, the two sexes both had their own role to play in their society. Just that man had more advantage and chances in doing things. But I don't think it was seen as a bad thing during that time, they probably thought that that was just the way it is, and it would be totally normal for women and men to live like this. In the play "The Taming of The Shrew", Petruchio was determined to "tame" Katherina to be a good wife. During the play Petruchio's forceful treatment towards Katherina basically sends a message to her, telling her that the only choice she has is to give up and adapt into the role of being a good wife.
