Mars

Mars was created from the material that was swirling around our sun. this happened about 4.6 billion years ago. It contains most of the same ores and minerals that the earth contains such as iron, a fair amount of iron oxide and a lot of silicates (Silicon, Oxygen and a lot of other stuff). The average recorded temperature on Mars is -63 C (-81 F) with a maximum temperature of 20 C (68 F) and a minimum of -140 C (-220 F). Mars is also the only known planet apart from earth to support frozen water at it's poles which scientists have seen grow and shrink as the seasons change. The Martian year is 687 Earth days, but a Martian day is 24. This volcano is now dormant, but was active millions of years ago. Olympus Mons, the largest volcano in the solar system is named after Mount Olympus, the home of the Greek / Roman gods and goddesses. Mars obtained its name due to its deep, war-like red colour. The Martian equatorial zone can reach temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius, although the average temperature on Mars is -63 degrees C. It is 24 km (15 miles) high, and the top of it is 70 km (40 miles) wide; the base is about 600 km (375 miles) wide. Mars' two moons, Phobos and Deimos, are named after Fear and Panic, the two lackeys of Mars. At the Viking 2 landing site, a thin layer of water frost covered the ground each winter. The canals that Percival Lowell thought were manmade, actually turned out to be a giant fracture zone that was 4800 kilometres across the Martian equator. nt of the atmosphere, freezes out to form an immense polar cap, alternately at each pole.
