Year-Round Schooling
Year round education is a method of schooling that is being used more and more frequently. Some states use this method in almost every county, however it is not proving to show any higher results in tests. Some families are very inconvenienced because their children may be on different rotations resulting in the children's school breaks always occurring at different times. Every year the school system is required to do testing to see how the children are progressing academically. This form of education was brought about to see if the children's academic reports would increase, it has yet to happen. " The effects of year-round schooling on academic achievement is that no such benefits can be expected," (Merino,B.J). "Children with learning problems fall further behind, and their learning problems are compounded when school districts rely on year-round calendar intersession to remediation,"(Newland, Chris). Year round education was developed to determine if a better-allocated school year could raise education levels. All it has accomplished is burning out the children, and creating resentment toward the school system. "One administrator said, "My head was spinning. I never, ever, had a break. In fact, in the eight years
Each child at the school they attend are assigned a color and that decides what team they will be on. This distraction and readjustment only happened two to three times in a school year as opposed to 4 or 5 times under the year-round program. The increased number of small breaks creates another problem. The alternative forms include a range of educational options from private school to home schooling. A strong indicator of the problems presented by the year-round school system is the response from the parents. Year round education should have been a temporary experiment. Teachers and faculty of the school systems that have adopted the year round education program are stressed as well. Usually students and their teachers will be in the classroom for two or three months and then have a three week vacation only to go back to a new classroom and set everything up again. That is one thing I think supporters of year-round education have forgotten, our teachers and faculty are moms and dads as well and if they are stressed with how much aggravation this is adding to their own life. Some teachers even work different hours from their own children's school schedule. Researchers in North Carolina have found that schools with longer calendars are usually more expensive to operate and tend to cause increase levels of teacher and administrator burnout. The normal student will begin to experience a drop in attention span starting five to seven days before the initial vacation. , about three percent, have already experienced year-round schooling. When it did not have the intended results it should have been deemed ineffective and forgotten.
