Foundations of Coaching

             A serious issue facing athletic programs today is religion. There are basically two different religious issues involved in athletics. Having practice or games on religious days or on Sundays, and prayer in sports.
             The first situation is whether to play games or practice on religious days. Most parents and athlete's have no problem with playing game on Sundays, although there may be some parents that appose the policy of playing games on Sundays. To make everything run smoothly the coach must make sure that it is not a violation of school policy. When he makes out his schedule, he must make sure that it is okay with the school to play games or practice on Sundays.
             The second situation that a coach runs into concerning religion in sports is prayer before an athletic contest. Most coaches give their players an opportunity to pray before a game, some athlete's have different religious activities they like to do before going onto a field, and the coach must understand this. In high school everybody got in a huddle and someone would say a prayer, then coach would go over some tips to remember while playing, then go out on the field. Some people think that prayer has no place in public school athletics. Whether or not prayer belongs in sport is not the coach's responsibility. A coach should understand that the issue exists. A coach should talk to the players, principal and AD concerning everyone thoughts on prayer at the games, just to make sure it doesn't turn into an issue later.
             Another issue facing athletic programs is crowd control. It is not the coach's responsibility to control the crowd, that responsibility falls onto the shoulders of the school officials, and other authority. The coach does have some responsibilities when it does come to crowd control. The coach must realize that fans and players take a cue from the coach, and if the coach is yelling
