Religious Dominance in Art
The concept of dominance involves a state that exists when one person or group has power or control over another. This same notion can be applied to any situation in our lives where one aspect controls or dominants. Throughout history religion has dominated particular cultures and the lives of many artists throughout past centuries. Three pieces of work have been selected to be renamed "Dominance." These three pieces share common links and although they are created in different eras, all represent a particular theme and qualities which directly relate to dominance. The three pieces are; William Blake - "Satan Arousing the rebel Angels," Giovanni Bellini - "San Giobbe" and El Greco - "El Espolio." William Blake's "Satan Arousing the rebel Angels" was created in 1808, it depicts Satan among other unclothed men rising from flames into the sky. William Blake was born in London in 1757 and at the age of 13 he was sent to Westminster Abbey to make drawings of tombs and monuments which would later play a part the themes of his work. During the mid 1700's society was full of chauvinism against women and the superiority of men. Through Blake's art he is able to address these issues by reinforcing male d
Their strong physic shown in the painting only refocuses the idea that men were built stronger and should therefore dominate over any other species. "Satan Arousing the rebel Angels" Has obvious religious components which is not surprising considering the dominant religious orientated era in which it was created. Bellini led the way in fostering the style of "tonalism," which gave less importance to design and graphics while highlighting the tones of light and colour of the church and the cross. All three pieces should be renamed "Dominance. "Satan Arousing the rebel Angels" Represents strong athletic figures of men who were considered dominant during this period. In it, the figures are placed monumentally to symbolise the lack of control in which the characters in the piece have over the dictating religion. This piece is to be renamed dominance as the artist was controlled and dominated by religion during her life which consequently lead to the creation of this piece. " They all possess dominant themes which reflect the cultural, historical and social influences of that particular era in which it was created. The strong red colour of his robe symbolises power, whereas the dark earthy colours possessed by the mob signify a subservient nature. Religious factors were a key dominant figure within all artworks as they influenced artist lives within earlier centuries. It was these beliefs and attitudes that caused a riff in people faith and William Blake's "Satan Arousing the rebel Angels" was a declaration about the dominance of religion and his beliefs. It is possible, however, that the intellectual developments of the 16th and 17th centuries produced an atmosphere which implied that human reason was capable of understanding the world and man's place within it. The cross is directly above the people to a produce symbol that represents a domineering quality above anything else below it. "El Espolio" contains strong themes of dominance. All faces and eyes are upon the figure of Jesus in the centre, as it is the dominant focal point of the painting.
