Civil War Term Paper

During both the civil war and civil war reconstruction time periods,there were many changes going on in the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation,as well as legislation such as the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenthamendments, was causing a new awakening of democracy; while the renouncing ofsecession by the South marked a definite triumph for Nationalism. As well, thegovernment was involved in altercations of its own. During reconstruction, thelegislative and executive branches eventually came to blows over the use ofpower. The nation was being altered by forces which caused, and later repaired, Attack on Fort Sumter prompted four more states ,Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee,and North Carolina, to join the Confederacy (South). Eventually, the residentsof the western counties of Virginia didn't wish to secede along with the rest ofthe state. This section of Virginia was admitted into the Union as the statesof West Virginia in June 20, 1863. On June 1861, public demand pushed General-in-Chief Winfield Scott to advance on the South before adequately training hisuntried troops. Scott ordered General Irvin McDowell to advance on Confederatetroops stationed at Manassas Junction, V


Before the real business, bothof themwere talking about other things rather than the Civil War and they seemed likegood friends. Lee defeated Union forces at Winchester, Virginia, andcontinued north to Pennsylvania. By May 4, they occupied Yorktown, Virginia. He crossed theRappahannock River to attack General Lee's forces. AtWilliamsburg, Confederate forces prevented McClellan from meeting the main partof the Confederated army, and McClellan halted his troops, awaitingreinforcement. On November 7, 1862, Lincoln replaced McClellan with General Ambrose E. Starving soldiers began to desert Lee'sforces. He understood that the Northhad advantages over the South in terms of soldiers and supplies. After the Battle of Bull Run, each side began totrain its troops and to plan strategy for the war. In the Battle of Fredericksbury, Burnside's forces were defeatedsomehow in a series of attacks against entrenched Confederate forces atFredericksburg, Virginia, and Burnside was replaced with General Joseph Hooker. From this battle,First Battle of Bull Run, everyone finally realized that the war would last muchlonger than what they thought. Johnston was severely wounded, and command of the Army of Northern Virginia fellto Robert E. Then on may 31, the Confederate army attacked federal forces inthe Seven Days' Campaign, almost defeating them; last-minute reinforcementssaved the Union from a serious defeat.
