The Crucible - Movie Review

             Negative comments towards Director Nicholas Hytners The Crucible can be found nowhere. His superb directing lifted this movie to a higher level. Fantastic settings and sceneries were out of this world. Outstanding actors did a tremendous job. This movie is so great, you will be watching it two, three, and four more times, so one can hear the breathtaking music all over again.
             The music in the movie set a perfect mood for most scenes. The perfect sound of the orchestral instruments were used many times to make one feel like they were really experiencing the scene. Picture yourself hearing long notes from orchestral instruments as Mrs. Proctor is being carted to court, as her husband John watches. It was overwhelming how the music can really make you emotional. What really fascinated me was the way intense times were expressed through the music. Loud thumping band instruments glued my eyes to the screen, waiting for something intense and exciting to occur. The music was best used during start of the movie. The scene is in dark woods, loud music is played using violins, cellos, and bases, and sounds of girls laughing echoed throughout the theater. The string music is intense and loud; the scenery is dark and eerie, while both provide a scary ambience throughout the audience.
             Out of this world does not even begin to describe the first setting. The dark foggy woods complete the magnificent scenery to shed an eerie and scary beginning. This scene offers a ghostly plot to the movie. Throughout most of the movie the settings have dim lighting. The darkness of the background was used well in showing facial expressions. Especially for the scene when Mr. Hale is examining Betty. Their faces seem to glow because of the dim background.
