             A Dynamic Character in "A Company of Laughing Faces"
             In the short story "A Company of Laughing Faces" by Nadine Gordimer, a dynamic character by the name of Kathy Hack is introduced to the reader. Kathy is a lonely girl lost in the years of her adolescence, not knowing exactly where she belongs. Her reality world of maturity versus her fantasy world of teenage normalcy take her down a new road. This road, however, is not a clear cut path, having its twists and turns, Kathy comes across many unexpected situations. Learning from each new experience, she slowly finds her place in life and transforms into a new character.
             One example of her transformation or change is the way she views teen life. Because she has never experienced it on her own, she paints a picture of it in her mind; full of fun, dancing, and as the book implies a company of laughing faces. As her painting becomes reality, she realizes that this picture perfect world which she imagined is not so perfect after all. She first notices this imperfection at a dance where she feels, as she says "helpless." Each and every person seemed to fit into one category or the other, but as for her, where did she belong? As the night ends and a new day approaches, Kathy's feelings of enthusiasm begin to lessen. Waking up to a new day in her newly found teenage life, not only does not amuse her, but she now sees it as a task. Life of a normal teenager in her mind, has changed from "fun fun fun" to "complicated complicated complicated". This is only a simple situation, and yet it has effected her train of thought quite deeply. As she comes across new things and takes herself to the next level, she finds her mind being tested in more ways than she is ready for.
