Gender in a lay man's term can be defined as the condition of being a male or female. But in sociological terms gender is the psychological, social and cultural aspects of maleness and femaleness. In many cases people tend to get mixed up between sex and gender; it is so because there is only a very small difference between the two terms. Sex is the biological state of being a male or a female that is it is determined at or before birth, and gender being the sociological aspect is acquired as the individual socializes. This distinction is between sex and gender is very important because it reminds us that males and females are different in many ways, the behavioral and experiential differences do not come naturally from the biological differences between sexes. In addition this differentiation allows us to separate masculinity from maleness and femininity from femaleness, making it possible for us to divert from cultural notions of gender without having any impact on their sex.Gender development is one of the most important parts of socialization. Socialization into expected gender roles is one of the most important lessons that young children learn. For example in the story "Jack And The Bean Stalk" Jack, the male character has the most important role; the story presents him to be a strong young man with lots of energy and adventure. Learned bases for gender differences are well established in the first few years of life. Besides Jack this story also has a central female character that is Jack's mother, this story has presented her to be an old helpless woman who relies on Jack for her survival. This is a perfect example of gender stereotyping, all the above mentioned stories present the male characters to be more independent creative and in some way superior to the female characters. But the more important role of shaping up their personality, identities etc are taken away by other factors. These story books portray males as the dominant characters most of the time, where as females as the recessive ones. This process of gender development starts right form a child's birth, the infants at birth are biologically determined if they are males or females. In both the above mentioned stories the females play the main character, Cinderella a female character plays the main role in "Cinderella" the story. There are a couple of female characters in the story but none of them have any important roles. Our everyday behaviors, tastes and desires, our experiences in relationships, our carrier choices, and our impression in the eyes of the others are directly or indirectly linked to gender.
