Hazardous Drivers

When we get into our cars to drive, we don't stop to think what kinds of otherdrivers we'll share the road with. We hope that other drivers will be safe drivers. We rarely realize that there are many hazardous drivers out there. Hazardous drivers vary from those who are under the influence, to very young or very old drivers. We have laws to keep these drivers off the road. For the under the influence drivers, we have a law which takes away a person's driver's license if she/he has been caught driving under the influence. For the young drivers, we have a law, which allows only persons over the age of 16 to posses a driver's license. However, there is still a group of hazardous drivers, which we have neglected. We have not made rules for these drivers to follow. This group of drivers is the older drivers. Although they have been driving for a very long time they are still a hazard on the streets. Because of the increasing amount of motor vehicle accidents caused by older people, laws should be made. In order to renew their license, drivers over 70 should be required to pass the driving test every three years, and drivers over 80 should be required to pass the driving

All of these problems add up and transform safe experienced drivers into hazards on the streets. Muscles weaken and joints stiffen, as the body gets older. This will help to keep our highway safer for everyone. Older people are also a lot weaker than young people, so if they get into a car accident then they are more likely to die in that crash. Older people react more slowly when they find themselves in a new situation, and may becomeconfused. For many older people their car is their independence, so if one takes away their car then it is the same thing as taking away independence. When older people get behind the wheel of their car, they are not onlyputting themselves in danger, but also all the other drivers around them. As a group, older drivers are some of the country's most experienced and save drivers. For the young drivers, we have a law, which allows only persons over the age of 16 to posses a driver's license. When teenagers drive and get into car accidents, their accidents are mostly associated with speeding; however, when senior citizens get into car accident, their accidents are mostly associated with not being able to react fast enough. They would have to constantly depend on someone to drive them around in order for them to get their daily chores done. Turning one's head when it's time to change lanes can become very hard to do. Many diabetic seniors have nerve damage in their hands, legs, or eyes. Many argue that it would be very cruel to take away their single mode of transportation. In order to renew their license, people over the age of 70 will need to pass the driving test every three years and persons 80 and over will need to take and pass the driving test annually.
