A tragic hero displays three main traits, a tragic flaw, a family of high class or rank, and is neither superlatively good nor corrupt. A tragic flaw simply means a character weakness, which results in their destruction. In Sophocles play Antigone, Antigone fulfills all three traits conscientiously. Antigone is a princess, because her father Oedipus was the King of Thebes. She is well respected and her unwarranted pride and ambition lead to her own destruction. Antigone's pride and ambition not only caused her own destruction, but the demise of many others in the kingdom of Thebes.
             Antigone's pride and ambition influenced her to do things, other Thebean citizens would not dare to do. Her brother Polyneices was killed in a battle with her other brother Eteocles. Antigone's uncle Creon, who is the king of Thebes would not allow Polyneices to be buried. Creon felt that Polyneices did not deserve to be buried. He considered him unworthy and "forbidden the city to dignify him with a burial; mourn him at all."(Antigone 227-228) If anyone was to go against his proclamation, they would suffer a horrible death. Creon wanted to leave "his corpse carrion for the birds and dogs to tear." (Antigone 229-230) This outraged Antigone, because she felt her brother deserved a proper burial. She loved and respected her brother, and felt he deserved as much honor as Eteocles. She felt he died miserably and deserved his soul to live on in the afterlife. Antigone is going to "raise a mound for him, for my dear brother." (Antigone 95) Her sister Ismene tried to talk her out of defying the city and their Uncle. Ismene did not want her sister to be killed for defying the proclamation set by Creon. However, Antigone was unwilling to accept that Creon would not bury her brother, and her sister would not help her.
