Cause and Effects of Acid Rain
What causes acid rain, and what effect does it have on our environment? This is a very good question that a lot of people have. There are many causes of acid rain. For each cause comes a hand full of effects on our environment. Many things are affected by acid rain. It affects our lakes, our rivers, our wild life and most importantly us. A chain reaction begins to occur when you talk about the affects acid rain has on our environment. Acid Rain is rain that falls from the sky onto our planet that contains an unnatural acidic. Acid rain is caused by a chemical reaction between two compounds like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides that are released into the air. When these substances rise very high into the atmosphere, they mix and react with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form acid rain. Nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide dissolve very easily in water and can be carried long distances by the wind. These particles come in different forms like acidic fog, snow, and gas. The trees that the birds live in can also die from the acid rain taking all the nutrients out of the soil. We as humans depend on plants, animals, and water for food. Acid rain is very harmful to our environment. Electricity that powers modern life comes from burning fossil fuels like coal, natural gas, and oil which release the majority of sulfur dioxide and much of the nitrogen oxides into the air. The water eventually gets to acidic for the life forms living in it and they eventually die. The acid enters the gills of the fish and poisoned them so they are unable to extract salt from the water to maintain their body's sodium levels. The run off of acid rain can also drain into our rivers, lakes and ponds. It affects our water, our wildlife and us. Then the birds will begin to suffer because they start to lose their habitat. Last but not least we are affected by acid rain. Another cause of acid rain is exhaust from cars, trucks, and buses. If the plant is vulnerable to diseases then when it reproduces it will be weak to diseases that it could once fight. If a plant that has diseases from acid rain is eaten by an animal then that animal will then begin to be poisoned by acid. The fish living in acidic water are found to have very little sodium in their blood because of acid poisoning.
