Standarised Tests
Imagine for a minute that you are a high school senior with your entire life ahead of you. You may have dreams of going to college and becoming a rocket scientist or getting a job at the local factory and starting a family. Whatever your goals are they all depend on you receiving a high school diploma. Without that little piece of paper the options for your future become very limited. Now imagine that you have bad test anxiety and have trouble-taking test. Just recently you have been told that a new policy has been put into affect in the area where you live that mandates that all seniors pass a standardized test to receive a high school diploma. Now your future rests on your ability to pass one test. A person's future should not be judged on a high-stakes test. Students should not have to pass a standardized test also known as a high-stakes test to receive a high school diplomaHigh school students should not be forced to take high-stakes test. Lorrie Shepard is quoted in saying "High-stakes testing misdirects instruction even for the basic skills. ) Even more important, within subjects content coverage will be narrowed in order to conform to the content or style of the test. Not only does high-stakes testing narrow curriculum and promote low-order thinking it also hurts women and minorities. Low-order thinking means students are not getting in depth with the material they are learning. However, the test issued solely for the purpose of study showed no improvement over time. Organizations such as the NAACP argue that on average girls score worse on the SAT than boys but have higher grades in school. (Phelps) The researchers compared student performance in math and reading from one commercial test given under high-stakes conditions in one school district to the student performance on a different commercial test with no stakes. Therefore they should not be the factor in determining if a student should or should not graduate. Some people feel that will better improve a student's education. Under pressure, class room instruction is increasingly dominated by tasks the resemble tests. (Phelps) As mentioned before, when high-stakes test are implemented in a school district teachers begin to focus their lessons towards the subjects on the test. Another reason high-stakes test should not be administrated is their emphasis on Lower-Order thinking. Also it is proven that Blacks and Hispanics score less than Whites.
