Heart of Darkness
In one of his novellas, "Heart of Darkness," Joseph Conrad narrates Marlow's dramatic tale of a journey into human nature's deepest recesses. Throughout this reflection, women play an ambiguous role in their contact with men. Some critics have completely dismissed their role as ineffective; however, a closer look reveals that women possess a profound function in "Heart of Darkness."Early in his career, Conrad established an identity as a strictly masculine writer by his narratives that contained only masculine men in the world of sea (Jones 14). It is these narrative novellas, such as "Lord Jim" and "Tales of the Unrest", that led to his unpopularity with females in society and the literary world (Jones 14). Eventually, in response to this unpopularity, he began to expand and create feminine characters (Jones 14). However, some critics complain that Conrad lacked skill when it came to creating women characters (Jones 14). Specifically, Susan Brodie argues that Conrad's "feminine creations are often dismissed as secondary and ineffective" to the plot and theme of the story (141). Evidence reveals that women indeed possess the important role of corrupting Conrad's masculine characters with their "link to evil and darkness" (Bross 41). The atmosphere can be described as death-like and dark: "The bent gilt legs and backs of the furniture shone in indistinct curves" (Conrad 72). According to the Victorian stereotype, she cannot handle the truth since she is weak. Additionally, she never speaks a word. Additionally, it represents the darkness that Marlow is entering. Since Marlow believes that she cannot handle the truth, he is forced to lie and create more darkness. These two women sit knitting wool in the headquarters of the company in Brussels. These two factors contribute to Marlow's fear of her. "She is the darkness that embraces and caresses him. As he sets out to find Kurtz, the manager of an ivory station and object of Marlow's obsession, confusion confronts Marlow and reality becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish.
