Poe vs. Dickinson
Poets can be so similar and yet so different at the same time. Edger Allen Poe and Emily Dickinson are two great American poets that are this way. Edger Allen Poe's works reflected his eerie lifestyle and personality. His poetry most often reflected loneliness and fear. Edger Allen Poe's poems usually took place in a dark or creepy setting. In "The Raven" has starts the poem with "Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary". The midnight dreary shows how his poems usually were. In "The Raven" he also writes about a lonely man mourning the lost of his beloved "Lenore" and is haunted by a creepy raven who symbolizes Lenore's ghost. The thumpish rhymes to this poe
Emily Dickinson themes were mostly about nature or great unanswered question of the universe. A good example of this effect is when in "The Raven" the bird repeats "Nevermore". Miss Dickinson poems didn't always have a point of view, but instead, they required a more deep understanding. Although her poems were written with deep intensity, it seems that her favorite themes were thunderstorms, sunsets, and snow, and yet at the same time they were all somehow related to some angle of her house or garden. Miss Dickinson also wrote in free verse. They both used deep thoughts and amazing imagery to tell their poems. They both wrote about things we don't understand or comprehend such as death. In "I heard a Fly buzz when I died"; Miss Dickinson asks if you are just food for the flies or if there is heaven. Emily Dickinson and Edger Allen Poe were two of America's greatest poets. m give it a somewhat nightmarish affect by showing the narrators fear and pain. This allowed her style to emerge even when she has nothing to really say. In "My life closed twice before its close" it doesn't have a direct statement but still comes across. They were also disconnected from society and its normal points of view.
