"h Kurtz : Famous man among the ivory seekers who has lived and hunted on the continent for a while and has exploited the savages becoming much like a savage himself. Kurtz tries to escape to the natives but Marlow catches him and takes him back to the steamboat head back for England. Kurtz is very ill and needs to be taken back to England, but he does not want to go. The savages attack and Marlow's men fire back. Themes The story mainly views Africa in three different aspects related to adventures, religion and economy: "h Some, like Marlow, go to Africa seeking action, excitement and self-understanding. Conrad uses Marlow as a narrator in order to inter the story himself and tell it out of his own mind. He is the man who Marlow anxious to meet because he thought they shared the same passion for the wilderness. A few days later, Marlow travels to Africa and gets to the first station where he meets the accountant who keeps track of the funds in Kurtz's company. The central station, where the European culture is present but corroding under the influence of native culture. Heart of Darkness, written in 1899, seems to portend the pessimism of the first years of the new century and appears to predict the sense of emptiness, dislocation, and desolation felt by the generation of writers who survived the First World War. She still remembers Kurtz as the great man he was before he left, and Marlow doesn't tell her what he had become before he dies. And while Marlow progresses further up the river in search for Kurtz he learn more about himself, and realizes that he's more in common with the natives. Marlow continues down the river on his steamboat with a crew of several whites and about 20 to 30 blacks.
