I recently read a book called "Lies my Teacher Told Me" by James W. Loewen. This book indicates about certain issues that the history students of the United States are not aware of.. This book shows how high school teachers has been taught the history without knowing the truth. Most people do not want to know the harsh realities of our nations past. The United States has tried to maintain a positive image throughout history. But, Mr. Loewen had compared twelve different history textbooks which they are: The Great Republic, The American Way, Land of Promise, Rise of the American Nation, Challenge of Freedom, American Adventures, Discovering American History, The American Tradition, Life and Liberty, The United States - A History of the Republic, Triumph of the American Nation and The American Pageant. He has argued about the specific themes as Racism, Heroification, the first settlers in our history. According to "Lies My Teacher Told Me", Racism has been in this country since the first non-native man put foot in the United States. North America became a breeding ground for racist views and ideology. It all started with the exploitation of the Indians and hopefully ending with the African-Americans. The Ind
Loewen knew this and saw the effect heroification had on various historic figures. He comments, "Wilson led the United States reluctantly into World War 1 and after the war led the struggle nationally and internationally to establish the league of nations. He also knew that historians who left certain things out did not do it on purpose either. They may be part to blame in the influence on some subjects however the textbooks on the average are not chosen by these people but by committees who are part of the countless school systems throughout this great nation. The article "The Day the Enlightment Went Out" is written by Garry Williams who is described this article in term of socialism. He comments, "what is the result to a society where our students are being taught this way (page 301)?" In the answer, the number one result is that students do not know the true history of their country nor do they remember what they were taught in class. In addition, he has asked his students throughout the years. We have made progress in 20th century in the United States. These committees who chose which textbooks are used in their schools don't actually have the time to read the textbooks but rather they scan through them. Even after slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865, the black man still had no rights as a 100% citizen. as far as enlightenment, it was a movement that freed people from the tyranny of prelates and other power authorities.
