One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
The book "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is about a man, Randle Patrick McMurphy, who is committed into a mental ward in Oregon after faking insanity to get, out of a work camp. Once committed McMurphy challenges the authority of a nurse named Ms. Ratched. Throughout the story the insubordinate nature of McMurphy conflicts with the tyrannical style of Ms. Ratched. What conflicts between the two characters is McMurphy starts to show the other men of the institution that they can open up and maybe start to become individuals. He tries to bring in laughter, gambling, and profanity to loosen up some of the patients. Eventually, McMurphy was killed but not without leaving his mark on the ward. When you first start to read the book, you will first notice that the story is told by one of the men who live in the ward. His name is Chief Bromden; a half-Indian who is one of the long time committed men. Bromden is a key character in the whole book. The Chief, is a large man in stature standing 6 foot 7 inches tall, but from reading you get the idea that in his mind he sees himself as a man only two or three feet tall. This could be the work of the over 200 electro-shock treatments h
The Chief was distant until he met McMurphy. The Chief has also been in the army and in WWII. It was always McMurphy as the leader and Bromden who followed him. At first it seemed as though McMurphy was being rebellious for his own good but as the story shapes into place, it seems he is becoming a leader or Christ, whom he is compared to many times in the book. There seemed to be some kind of bond between the two. This infuriates McMurphy to the point where he attacks the nurse and tries to strangle her. McMurphy became the only person the Chief opened up and talked to. Like when Billy Bibitt was found in the room of a girl from a party the night before and Ms. Ratched didn't let them because she wanted them to know that she has authority and sooner or later they will have to give in and obey her. He told McMurphy all about his childhood and about what goes on in the hospital. Being a deaf mute has enabled him to hear some of the secrets of the ward because everyone thought it was safe to talk around him. McMurphy showed the Chief how to grow as a person, and as a man. Throughout the book McMurphy seemed to have a temper, which could have been a big reason for his death. It has physiologically beaten him to think that he is an inferior being, so much so that he has led everyone to think he is deaf and mute.
