             As any given viewer turns on the television or flips through a magazine, they will witness the growing trend of sport star endorsements in advertisements and commercials. Companies believe that society is more likely to purchase a certain product if an athlete says it is appropriate or beneficial. The product or label may be weak , but an athlete's reputation gives it credibility. Various athletes appear in product ads for one simple reason: to make money, and numerous athletes have become, "celebrities" due to the increase in endorsements and the companies that have sponsored them.1 .Therefore, the media uses athletes as pons to influence society in order to increase their profits.
             The business of sports endorsements has come along way since the 1970's 2. The growing market of endorsements is now larger because of the vast change in technology. The television allows athlete's to be seen, the radio allows athlete's to be heard and the Internet allows athlete's to be downloaded. Therefore, endorsement companies have benefited a great deal due to the large growth of technology. Athlete's today have become so affective in selling products because 85% of North Americans watch some sort of sport3. This high percentage is tremendously beneficial to companies because an athlete will always be seen, and if an athlete is seen then so will the product. Companies use sport star's rather then movie or rock stars because they are followed on such a regular basis . Athletes play 60 to 182 games a year and more then half are televised4. This allows a certain product to be seen regularly and allows the viewer to get to know the athlete and the companies that are endorsing them . Consumer's are swayed by advertising companies because they have no choice but to be. The different mediums are always in close reach and the athlete's and the product are endlessly trying to intise you. Driving down the street there will be at least two billboards ...
