Case Study Genetics Genomes and Choices
Unfortunately there are many cases of drug use during pregnancy. I can't help to wonder how many lives are affected by such an atrocity. But, how do we really feel about this issue? When does it bother us the most? Is it not until a loved one or close friend encounters this issue? I'm trying to be neutral on this subject because I have a close relative dealing with this issue now. Our family has been at odds with it because we want to keep the family unit intact. Is this a just law? Yes its just when applied to those cases that need extensive involvement from outside agencies. The mother loses her rights the moment she makes the decision to use drugs. The child has the legal right to be protected from illegal activity, in which drug use qualifies
Once she has been assigned this mentor I would suggest that after the child has been born the mother be allowed to care for and nurture the child as she goes into detoxification. Given all the facts of displaced children I believe there could be a few things that could be done to help ease the issue of pregnancy and drug use. I think this type of program can work providing all parties involved take an active role in the recovery for mother and child. Now this type of program sounds a little more acceptable. Once a mother test positive put her in a facility more befitting a pregnant women, so there is still some dignity intact. If the child is shown to have an issue with the addiction as well, this maybe delayed until the child is in a more favorable position. I realize there may be issues with serious drug addiction. The lawmakers of Florida may want to take a second look at this program and perhaps look for more positive reinforcement in this issue. Family is very important and when a child or parent is lost it can have a devastating affect on both parties. This is where extensive research and observations come into play. You see so many young people who have been tossed too and fro because the state has intervened for the sake of the child. The only thing I see wrong with this law is there are no resources for the mother and child to ensure the family unit can be successfully restored. Where are the studies on the children and parents this law effects? I believe that the research would say more as to how effective this law is.
