Tell-Tale Heart

When one starts reading his short stories, the first idea that captures
our imagination is the horror that is combined with violence and evil. Poe always sees in the objects around him as symbols of mysterious and evil supernatural powers. For example,in the "Tell-Tale Heart," the old man's vulture pale blue eye represent the complete evil. The idea of evil can be related to Poe's childhood. It is a childlish way of judging elements as being unnatural and horrible. Poe, as a child, was afraid of a world that was characterized as being disordered and perverse. He was left lonely and instable in the hands of strangers. This situation created inside him a desire to vengeance. He believed that the world and the society had wronged him and kept him there in the shadow- desperate, poor, and helpless. If we move on through all his life, we see that he never had one peaceful moment in his life but rather lived in continual violent quarrels with others. However,he was not strong enough to face the world but began to gamble, drink, and even commit suicide. That is why he moved to write so that all these suppressed desires and fears can be set free. He always presents himself by the main character or hero as a victim of a world which is a reflection of the outside world. Thus, he is able to take revenge, to kill, or at least to express his own feeling and anger.
