Comparing Islam and Christianity

Both Islam and Christianity are monotheistic religions, believing in the same god, referred to as 'Allah' by the Muslims and, 'God' by the Christians. In this sense, Islam and Christianity are considerably intertwined, appearing to come from the same beginning. For Christianity, the stories about the origin of the universe are found in the first two chapters of the book of genesis, in their holy book, the Bible. They show how God created the world in six days. The following quote shows how God created the world from nothing:"In the beginning God created the heavens and earth."Similar to Christianity, the Islamic stories about creation are found in their holy book, the Qur'an. Just like the Bible, the Qur'an states that Allah created the world in six days, out of nothing. "Your Guardian Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then He settled Himself on the Thrown."There are two scientific theories about the origin of the universe, cosmology and evolution (see Appendix 1 for definitions). These have sometimes posed a major problem for Christian beliefs about creation. The Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christian groups disregard the scientific t

Both holy books contain similar ethical teaching and stories, yet, there are some differences between the Quranic and Biblical versions in the details of certain stories. This applies to all Muslims, except Shi'is are permitted to combine the 5 prayers into 3 sessions. Rather, the day is thought of as a day on which all business activities are temporarily suspended for an interval of communal prayer in the mosque. Firstly, both are monotheistic religions recognising God/Allah as creator. The teaching for both Islam and Christianity is that the human being lives only a single life; that his soul survives his death, disembodied; and that, at some unpredictable future date, every soul will be re-embodied in order to undergo the last judgement and according to the verdict, to enjoy physical bliss in heaven or physical anguish in hell. Therefore scientific explanations are welcomed as they help Muslims to have a greater understanding of Allah's creation. The belief in life after death is fundamental to both Islam and Christianity. In Islam, the Qur'an repeatedly emphasises the dual nature of humankind's obligations. When people die most will go to purgatory where they will receive some punishment for their sins. Many Christians say a prayer of thanksgiving at meal times, known as grace. For Christianity, although it has been viewed as a biblical theme, it has not always been viewed as a top priority by most Christians. Friday is for Islam yet it is not necessarily regarded as a 'day of rest'. Protestants and Roman Catholics accept evolution as a hypothesis and teach that evolution was under God's control and guidance. Both religions believe that the concept of social responsibility entails that the individual members of society work together to fulfill the general needs of society as well as the individual needs of its members and that they work together to protect society from harm. Islam, unlike Christianity, does not treat law and morality as different things.
