Lord Of the Flies
Norman Cousins states "Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live." As people live and are exposed to the hardships in life things inside them that they thought were right now die. In of Lord of the Flies by William Golding the immature boys are exposed to life without grownups so the sense of stability and wrongdoing dies inside of them because if they have no influence from the grownups of what is right and wrong they won't know the difference. In Lord of the Flies Roger is on the verge of losing his mind from the beginning but Simon stays in touch with the parental influence keeping him grounded and sane. Ralph experiences evil through the boy's influence and gives in to the temptation of the easy life of savagery forgetting why he wants to go home. Roger is free to do whatever he wants whenever he wants. He takes full advantage of the opportunity of having no rules. For example, Roger throws stones at one of the boys just missing. "Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law." Authority is what kept Roger from becoming insane. Now that there
This savage act makes Roger feel so good because this is what was building inside of him for so long and now he has the perfect chance to let it all out. This obsession is addictive because hurting people makes him feel powerful and important like he has a job on life and people need him. Exposing yourself to the challenges of life is what is essential to grow in life but it is hard because you have to know what is right from wrong. In conclusion, Roger has no sorrow because he has no one telling him what he is doing is wrong. Roger represents brutality and bloodlust at the extreme in this part of the book because he is at the climax where nothing can stop him from committing horrible acts. Unlike the other boys Simon represents natural human goodness. Ralph becomes entranced in the frenzy of dancing and chanting because he is also losing his mind and once again releases the evil inside him; participating in the task of killing Simon. Simon uses his insights to exclude himself from the others in such a way that seems insane but is really excluding him from it. Roger expresses insanity at its climax because once it comes out no one will ever be able to stop him. Ralph took pride in himself to show the others that he was capable of being a leader but when all the boys go to Jack's tribe Ralph feels no need to empress and no determination to be rescued. This shows that Simon uses is own spiritual goodness to block out evil and remain sane. Furthermore, Roger shoves a massive rock down the cliff of the mountain killing piggy and shattering the conch. Stay strong and don't be afraid to stand out in life. He is deeply connected to his surroundings and doesn't let the savagery of the island get to him.
