Fight Club
Use of Lighting in a Film: Fight Club As the torrential rain beats against the glass of the windshield , inside the car Jack (Edward Norton) and his alter ego Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), are having a fierce argument. The two founders of “Fight Club” are driving down a highway conversing about their future plans for their organization which is quickly becoming popular. With them are two young men who have recently became members of the “fight club”. Fight Club has progressively been gaining more and more members and, thus have been changing its ideals . From what was just a sparring club to release anger, Fight Club has turned into a cult like group that plans on causing chaos and havok throughout the city. Tyler and jack plan on changing the mundane lifestyle of the average man, from just a unhappy robot like . . .
The argument is over the radical thoughts of how Tyler believes they should run the organization and the more conservative views of Jack. As a very large eighteen wheeler truck heads directly towards them the once intimidating and ominous men in the car look scared and innocent as the bright Headlights envelope their faces. And as the car accelerates down the road The shadows are quickly cast of the men in the car as they zoom down the street. The lightening along with the constant verbal fighting gives a feeling of uneasiness within ones inner orientation at this point in the scene as if something dreadful may happen. The scene concludes as Tyler Durden lets go of the wheel and as a leap of faith the men in the car let the vehicle drive itself off the road into a revene on the side of the highway. As car headlights wiz by and the rain abstracts the lighting it effects the chiarascuro of the scene and shows the actual depth and drama within the scene. The strong lights of street lamps and car lights add hard light which show the expressions and distinguishes the characteristics of the men’s faces in the car. This is a example of how lighting can change ones perception of people, places or things. As one could tell this scene is a very dark and dreary one, the lighting throughout the entire scene is low key with a lack of lighting, just sometimes adding light selectively and infrequently. As the men come to the blinking hazard lights of the car cast low key frequent shadows in the vehicle as they pry themselves out of the heap of metal. As Tyler starts to bear the vehicle into incoming traffic the hue of bluish halogen headlights and bright red brake lights saturate the petrified men’s faces inside the vehicle. And the low key lighting reinstates the importance of the emotions in the scene. These once menacingly looking men in a dark scenery, can suddenly change into innocent and harmless people just due to the lightening of the situation.
