How does Faulkner direct and shape the reader's reaction's to the story?Faulkner takes advantage of flashbacks while he is constructing his narrative in order to accomplish a great effect of suspense. First, the narrator presents some fictional facts that provide verisimilitude to the short story. The narrative starts when Miss Emily dies. Then the narrator, which is a third person one, introduces the community's readings of Miss Emily, also talking about the behavior of this community in relation to her. Furthermore, he introduces the second fact, no one except an old manservant had seen inside her house in at least ten years before her death. Once the reader is informed of these two statements, the narrator begins with the flashbacks, mixing them with present descriptions in a stream of consciousness, or in a stream of memories, that leads the reader to feel sympathy for Miss Emily due to her loneliness and due to the fact it was hard for her to live by herself in the south of USA on a period of time when people were so conservative and prejudiced. Thus, Faulkner also mingles the protagonist feelings trying to mislead the reader to believe in other possibilities than the ending he creates for the short story. Regarding the plot, the crime committed by Miss Emily tied up the loose ends in the short story, so that all the evidences given by the narrator such as the authoritarian attitude of Miss Emily, the madness in her family, her pride, her isolation, were brought to an end. However, the rose inside the room was faded just as the love and hope of Miss Emily were.
