A Glimpse into the Mind of Tita
The story of Tita is one of immense pain and sorrow, one of intense longing that is forbidden due to family tradition. Tita wishes to marry the man she loves, Pedro Muzquiz, but in a ironic twist of fate, her mother decides that, due to the family's tradition, Tita may not marry anyone so that she can take care of her mother in her old age. This feeling of unfairness permeates the entire story, giving the reader a glimpse inside of the mind, psyche, and soul of a wronged woman. In Like Water for Chocolate, Laura Esquivel shows the personality of a very complex young woman, Tita. One of the most apparent traits of Tita is her rebelliousness and strong-willed nature. One example, shown on pg. 2 in the last paragraph, is "when the [sausage] animals had to be taken apart to fry the sausage. Tita refused to do it (2)." These instances where she refused to allow the sausage animals to be broken apart reflects her strong-willed personality. Her rebelliousness also shines through in the fact tha
Doubts and anxieties sprang to her mind. This anger is another very important part of Tita's persona. Tita loses the man she loves in one fashion, in that she is unable to marry him, but in another way she knows that she is the only one he will ever love. " Tita is shown to be a very rebellious and strong-willed person, both of which have the potential to lead to much anger. " The icy feeling that she has in her heart is one of seething anger, a feeling that takes a while to die down. (4)" The fact that she argued with her mother in this part, after being directly told not to, helps establish her rebellious nature. Also the fact that that feeling didn't change relates back to her hardheadedness. She also was taking the opportunity to use the dough as her outlet so that her mother would not see her crying. The first example, in the last paragraph on page 6, Esquivel says of that the news from Nacha ". That same rebelliousness also fuels and brings forth her strong-willed opinions and hard-headedness. The anger she feels is bottled up inside and is released in the conclusion of February when the people feel her sorrow from the cake. The above quotations show Tita's immense anger, frustration and, perhaps, a horrible twinge of sorrow.
