History of Soccer

The game of soccer can be traced back to as far as the eleventh century. The sport started in England, but the actual inventor or specific time the sport was invented remains unknown. In the beginning, it was a sport that was played during religious ceremonies or large gatherings, but it is widely agreed upon that by 1175 it became a game that was played by English schoolboys. Throughout the medieval period many rulers such as Edward II in 1314, put a ban on “soccer” supposedly because it was a distraction. And although the concept of the sport is very simple there is so much technique and skill involved in the playing of the sport. There are two teams (each with 11 players), and each team must advance the ball down the field and score it in their opponent’s goal without using their hands or arms. Even today, all the rules for the sport aren’t universal.

After King James’ proclamation in 1603, the popularity of soccer in England just exploded. Since they were both called football, but were two totally different sports, something needed to be done to separate the two. In many cases the pride of a town or country rests on the shoulders of its local soccer team. The popularity of American soccer is growing more and more; who knows, maybe it will become the sport of the future.

Soccer is a sport that crosses all nationalities, races, and culture lines. he country of England until1603, when King James I urged the people to play “football”. I’ve always wondered why in America, we call it soccer, while the rest of the world calls it football. It’s just one example of how a sport changes over time and that there are often very interesting reasons behind these changes and adaptions of a sport. The reason for that is that when soccer came to the United States, a sport called rugby developed from it.

One very interesting thing I learned while studying the history of soccer was in learning the origin of the term “soccer”. It’s all kind of confusing, but I found it very interesting. Overall, the sport has progressed a long way.
