Laertes, Horatio and Fortinbras as foil characters to Hamlet

In William Shakespeare's play Hamlet, Hamlet's character development is helped greatly by the similarities and differences in his foil characters. One of Hamlet's foil characters is Laertes. Both Laertes and Hamlet went through the tragedies of loosing their fathers. Although both characters are completely different they both react very similar to this news. When Hamlet finds out his father was killed by his uncle, Claudius, he immediately plots to avenge his father's death and kill Clau

Before the death of King Hamlet Denmark's army defeated Fortinbras' army from Norway. He then plots with Claudius to kill Hamlet with a poisoned sword. Although they have many things in common, the way Horatio and Hamlet act toward the coming of King Hamlet is completely different. When Laertes finds out about his father, Polonius, being killed at the hand of Hamlet he doesn't decide to kill him until he returns from England. Horatio is hesitant at first because he is not sure who the ghost is. Although this happened at the end of the play, it deeply widens the development of Hamlets character. The main cast in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet helps Prince Hamlets character develop with ease. It helps us understand him and his attitude and feelings toward his father's death. Through Horatio, Hamlet is shown to be very courageous and trusting. Finally, another one of Hamlets foil characters is Fortinbras, the king of Norway. He doesn't want to Hamlet to go with him because he thinks it could cause harm. Through all the things in the past, Hamlet can still find it in his heart to forgive Fortinbras. Horatio is one on Hamlets best friends.
