Intraction Design

"Interaction design is more of an art than a science." Discuss this statement in the context of software interfaces and human-computer interaction. As computers become pervasive in our environment, so the problems of user interface design and computer-human interaction become ubiquitous. In the future, human society will be more computerized and people will be supported by computers in their day to day lives. In such a environment those who cannot use computers cannot participate in human society. Thereby, anyone must be enabled to access computers and this is possible by using software interfaces that make human computer interaction possible. The word "design" is often associated with the visual, affective qualities of objects. Artistic certainly play a central role in fields such as fashion, product, interior and graphic design and increasingly in software design as well. Interaction design is "a discipline concerned with the design, evaluation and implementation of interactive computing systems for human use and with the study of major phenomena surrounding them."(web site). Human-computer interaction is concerned with the joint performance of tasks by humans and machines; the structu

re of communication between human and machine; human capabilities to use machines. When a solution seems relatively promising it is tested more formally on a new set of users. Before starting to construct the interface it is always necessary to do a fair bit of research about the users an their requirements because one user interface can be difficult to operate for some users as they are familiar with a different style of interface, and yet other users would find it easier to familiarise themselves with certain interfaces than other users. But, the designers can proceed only so far in their heads before needing to test a solution informally, first on themselves, later on colleagues, then on final users. The organising idea is vital to the interface's success; without it a potent representation of the system to the user is precluded. This more prominent role follows from the widely perceived need to expand the focus of computer science research beyond traditional hardware and software issues to attempt to better understand how technology can more effectively support people in accomplishing their goals. Engineers are always concerned about getting the thing work and artist set their own agenda in terms of aim and process. One of the important principle in term as of software interface isThe principle of user profiling that is "Know who your user is". This either prevents him or her from maximising the effectiveness of the system as a whole, or necessitates its costly redesign. Interaction designers put their imagination, both with outside influences and by making and reflecting on their own work. But an initial decision for representing the system, made before the interface designer is consulted, may turn out incapable of adequate representation on screen. The interface is all the user knows about the tool; its success or failure distinguishes a good tool from bad. Knowledgeable managers are recognizing that excellent user interfaces produce dramatic marketing advantages because they can greatly increase productivity, substantially reduce fatigue and errors, and enable users to be more creative in solving problems. Information technology is becoming an environment within which people operate rather a device that they pick up and use.
