             How important is gaze and eye contact in social interaction?
             NVC is used to regulate social interaction. The eyes and also the mouth dominate facial expressions. But just how much they influence interpersonal communication is what I chose to investigate. Eye contact and gaze are different: gaze is one person looking at another, where as eye contact is when two look at each other at the same time. This is also known as mutual gaze.
             Eye contact is used throughout interaction with another. When two people meet mutual gaze is used as a signal to convey willingness to interact and they will avert their eyes just before addressing each other. Without mutual gaze on first meeting it normally shows that one in the pair doesn't want to interact. Whilst in conversation gaze is used as a regulator; it helps it flow. Generally, we look at people more when we are listening, and look away whilst we are speaking. By looking at someone we show genuine interest in the topic. Argyle has stated that gaze takes place 70% of the time whilst listening and 40% whilst speaking. There are also differences between gender; men will not look as much as women whilst talking. This could be because men find open discussion much harder than women. It is most likely that speakers gaze less as they do not want to be interrupted and only look up for feedback every so often. People can also recognise 'abnormal' gaze patterns during communication. An example of this would be constantly gazing at the other person during which utterances this can be highly uncomfortable for the speaker. When talking to more than one person we use haphazard eye contact, which means looking at each person in an unpredictable and random order.
             It is possible to predict when a person is about to finish speaking. This is called an intention gesture: something indicates something else will follow. In this situation the eyes are used to signal the end of utterances. Just b...
