The Scarlet Letter ~ Pearl

             When, in Chapter Fifteen, Pearl fashions her own "A" out of seaweed, she is oblivious to it's meaning; however, she knows that it is significant. Pearl inquires as to what the letter means, but Hester refuses to explain and will not elaborate on its symbolism. Pearl has often been referred to as the living form of her mother's scarlet letter. Pearl's choice of live seaweed for the letter symbolizes her striving motivation to be like her mother and to be a living remembrance of Hester's sin. The color green, like her mother's red, is meant to stand out in public and attract attention.
             In the book, as a direct result of Hester being ostracized by society, both Hester and Pearl become secluded in their own home, having little interaction with the public. Pearl is primarily in her mother's company. As an imaginative seven year old, Pearl tries to emmulate the most dominate figure in her life, her mother. She sees her mother as a role model. Beginning in the crib, Pearl has associated her mother with the scarlet "A" on her chest. Later, in Chapter Sixteen, Pearl states that she expects to receive a scarlet "A" on her chest when she gets older.
             The green color and material of her letter play an important role in the symbol that Pearl portrays. In the puritan society of Pearl's day, the women typically wear dark, somber clothes that are meant to blend in and not draw attention to their adornment. Hester, when charged to fashion the scarlet letter, makes it out of beautiful thread chosen to stand out in a crowd and goes
